So a wrench was thrown into our reno plans... my first "tenant" moved in before we even can get to some much needed repairs. Yup... my uncle moved his stuff in August 1, so we are doing a little zig before we zag. What does this mean for the reno project? Instead of working with an empty house which is much easier when you have subcontractors making a mess, we will have to work room by room and hawkishly be cleaning up after each worker as they come through.
As for what's left on the to-do list:
We stalled the building of the stairwell and expanding the 2nd level and instead have shifted to just keeping the current footprint of the bedrooms... still a 3 bed, but just small rooms. We need to tear up a wall in one room to update the electrical in the house, but in the other rooms, we can get access from the 2nd attic level. As for the bathroom and kitchen... as soon as the bulkhead is made, a full gut of the bathroom and kitchen will be underway. Garage plans will be on hold until the house is made livable. Then once the house is livable, we will focus on the garage... move uncle into the garage studio apartment and then go back to a full reno and expansion of the 2nd level on the house.
In other interesting developments, Bette, the original owner's daughter who is now about 92, drove by as she always does checking up on her "Dad's" house. She gave me a little bit of the history of the house and was so glad to see that the house is now owned by people who will bring it back to life. We've invited her to come back to see it when it's all done.
